First started karate training in 1984 at the Dunedin
Dojo under the instruction of Sensei Bob Cahill.  In
June 1986 Murray was graded Sho Dan by Sensei
Morio Higoanna.  During 1985 and 1988 Murray
taught at the University of Otago Karate Club where
around 120 students regularly trained two nights
a week.  During this time Murray continued to train
at the Dunedin Hondo Dojo 4 nights a week. In 1989
Murray moved to Auckland and continued his
training at the Glenfield Honbu Dojo under Sensei Dennis May.

During mid 1990's Murray took up triathlons which culminated in him qualifying and
competing as an amateur in the 1993 Ironman World Championships at Kona
Hawaii,  finishing in 214 place.

In 2001 Murray resumed his karate training at the Westmere Dojo under Sensei
Gerard Jackson and at Honbu Dojo under Sensei Dennis May.  In August 2006
Murray was graded to Yon Dan by Sensei Dennis May.

In October 2004 Murray started the Remuera Dojo at the Victoria Avenue Primary
School Hall.  When this hall became unavailable due to renovations in May 2005
the Remuera Dojo moved to Kings Prep School Gym.  The club moved back to
Victoria Avenue Primary School Hall in December 2005 as the Kings Prep School
Gym was demolished to make way for new classrooms and a new gym.
